Maths Vision

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  •  can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At Throston Primary School, we aim to inspire a love of mathematics in every student, ensuring they see it as an exciting, practical, and essential part of everyday life. The intention of the maths curriculum is for children to become competent mathematicians through the delivery of high-quality lessons that are enjoyable, engaging, and challenging. We strive to develop children's enjoyment of maths and provide real-life opportunities that allow them to become both independent and collaborative learners with inquisitive minds. Our goal is to ensure they have a secure mathematical foundation, recognise the importance of mathematics in the wider world, and foster a genuine interest in self-improvement.

Through daily lessons, we want all children to develop an understanding of maths, equipping them with the skills of calculation, reasoning, and problem-solving that they will need in life beyond school.

During ‘My Money Week’, we aim to empower students to understand and apply mathematical concepts through real-world contexts. By linking traditional mathematical skills with practical life experiences, we seek to build a foundation of financial literacy, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking.

We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning, which provides a sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge over time and supports mastery for all.
