Intent, Implementation and Impact

Science Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

In Science, we encourage our children to be curious about natural phenomena and to be intrigued by the process of understanding the world around them. Children will be encouraged to work scientifically and develop scientific knowledge and understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science.

Implementation

Our Science curriculum is taught as discrete units and lessons, to ensure coverage linking into topics and themes. Throughout KS1 and KS2, Science is taught consistently, once each week for up to two hours. Year 1 through to Year 6 predominantly use the White Rose Science scheme. Science in EYFS is taught through topics within the ‘Understanding of the World’. This bespoke curriculum was designed by the EYFS teaching staff, covering the necessary elements of the statutory framework. Throughout the school, children are taught how to develop and use a range of skills including observations, planning and investigations and become independent learners by exploring possible answers for their own scientific based questions.

Impact

Children will show enthusiasm for science.  They will become increasingly independent when working scientifically, selecting the appropriate resources and equipment, using scientific vocabulary with accuracy.  Children will develop an understanding of the uses and implications of Science in the wider world. They will apply their scientific knowledge to real life scenarios and use their investigative skills to independently complete experimental work, as they continue their scientific journey into secondary school.
