‘A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture

is like a tree without roots’.

Marcus Garvey

At Throston Primary School we want the study of history to fire children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Our history teaching helps children to ask questions, think carefully, consider evidence and begin to understand the diversity and complexity of human experience.

Our history curriculum has been carefully designed and sequenced to equip our children with a secure, coherent knowledge of British, local and world history. Our curriculum content is knowledge and vocabulary rich, in sequenced chronological order, allowing children to develop their understanding of historical concepts as they move through school.

By the time our children leave us to transfer to secondary school, they will:

  • develop a chronological knowledge and understanding by investigating the past and how it influences the present
  • ask and answer questions about change, cause, similarity, difference and significance
  • use historical evidence and information and form their own opinions
  • communicate their ideas about history in a variety of ways using appropriate vocabulary
  • develop enjoyment, empathy and curiosity for finding out about the past.
