Art and Design
Vision
'Every child is an artist.' Pablo Picasso
We believe that art, craft and design enable children to develop their human creativity. Our curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils, giving them the knowledge and skills to experiment, explore, invent and create their own work using a range of media and materials. Pupils learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are introduced to a diverse range of artists and designers, enabling them to think critically and develop knowledge and understanding of art and design and how they reflect and shape our history and culture. We provide opportunities for discussion and reflection on what we have seen and children's own work. We recognise the role of art in promoting wellbeing, self-esteem and creativity.
By the time our children leave us to transfer to secondary school, they will:
- use sketchbooks to record, explore and develop ideas
- develop their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials
- have a growing understanding of a diverse range of artists and designers

The Seven Areas of Exploration: What can we see? How can we explore colour? how can we build worlds? How can we explore materials and marks? How can we explore 3D materials? How can we use our bodies to make art? How can we use our imaginations? Staff approach planning in a playful way, led by the children. Across the year they ensure that every child experiences at least one activity from each section, balancing out 3D making with 2D opportunities such as drawing, printing or painting. |
