Foreign Languages

Vision

'To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world'

Chinese Proverb

At Throston Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. Pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

Here at Throston, the core language taught throughout Key Stage 2 is French. All children access first quality teaching of French.  Lessons are interactive, fun and lively and children are given the opportunity to develop new communication skills and build a vocabulary in a foreign language.

By the time our children leave us to transfer to secondary school, they will:

  • listen to French and begin to pick out familiar words and cognates
  • engage in simple short conversations on familiar topics
  • read short texts using known phonic knowledge
  • write using a model, beginning to conjugate verbs and use conjunctions and adjectives
  • develop an understanding of gender and nouns, adjectival agreement and verb conjugation
