Physical Education

Vision

'Exercise should be regarded as tribute to the heart' Gene Tunney

Throston Primary School promotes a healthy and active lifestyle for all our pupils, including two hours of PE a week. We are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of our children and understand the impact sport and physical activity has on this.

We aim to provide a balanced and broad PE curriculum to support children’s increasing self-confidence within a variety of situations. A balance of individual, team, and competitive activities  caters for individual pupil’s needs and abilities.

In addition to our PE lessons, we also have a wider curriculum offer which gives pupils the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular sports clubs and competitions.

It is recommended that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school. By providing pupils with opportunities for daily active lessons, active breaks and lunchtimes and extra-curricular activities, we support them to lead healthy, active lives.  Our Play Leaders support their peers and younger children by leading active games on our yard and school field.

By the time our children leave us to transfer to secondary school, they will:

  • use the fundamental skills of running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games, attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance
  • perform dances using a range of movement pattersn
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activities
  • evaluate and improve their own performance
  • swim 25 metres

Links with Other Schools

Throston have excellent links with High Tunstall College of Science, including within PE.

Part of our sports premium money provides us with the expertise of specialised PE teachers to deliver weekly PE lessons to help up-skill our staff and offer specialist teaching for our children. We also use their swimming pool and their swimming coach delivers lessons for Years 3 - Year 6.

High Tunstall also delivers the Junior Advanced Performance Programme (JAPP).  JAPP selects children who attend sports clubs outside of school and show good attitude and sporting ability.  The Programme aims to give primary school students the skills to excel in their chosen sports, to enable them to access a wide range of sporting activities and to give them the opportunity to work with other students who excel in PE, including the High Tunstall students who are currently on the Advanced Performance Programme.
