Music
Vision
'Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything' Plato
We give all of our children a ‘flying start to success’ in music during their time at Throston Primary School through high-quality teaching and opportunities to gain an appreciation and understanding of music through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres. We want them to develop a love of music and increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
We will provide opportunities for all children regardless of their academic ability, race, ethnicity, background and language to access music and to fully participate in lessons to create, play, perform and enjoy music; to develop their skills; to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms; and to begin to review and evaluate the quality of their music. Throughout each child’s time at Throston we aim that children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, giving them the opportunities to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences in a variety of different musical contexts, through listening to and taking part in performances, collective worship and encouraging their love for music outside of school.
By the time our children leave us to transfer to secondary school, they will:
- sing, play and perform with increasing accuracy, control and expression
- compose music for a range of purposes
- listen with attention to detail and improve their aural memory
- use and understand music notation (crotchets, rests, quavers, minims and the position of notes on the stave)
- listen to different traditions of music and begin to develop an understanding of the history of music
